DIY Christmas

Decorations on a Budget

This year, I realized we were a little short on Christmas decorations. With a family of five, I wanted to make sure we had stockings and some festive touches around the house, but I didn’t want to spend a lot. So, I got creative with materials I already had at home, and the results were simple, homely, and perfect for our family!

DIY Christmas Stockings

I didn’t have any stockings, but I did have an old Christmas table runner that wasn’t being used. Instead of letting it sit in a drawer, I turned it into stockings for all five of us.

Here’s how I did it:

1. Create a Template: I traced an existing stocking to make a simple template out of paper.

2. Cut the Fabric: I placed the template over the table runner, pinned it down, and cut out the stocking shapes.

3. Sew It Together: Once the pieces were cut, I pinned them together and sewed the edges. It didn’t take long, and I didn’t worry about perfection!

4. Add Names: To personalize the stockings, I hot-glued Scrabble pieces onto each one to spell out our names.

The stockings are small and rustic, but they’re functional and add a personal touch to our holiday decor.

DIY Christmas Garland

I also wanted something festive to hang over the TV and in the entryway. Instead of buying expensive garland, I made my own using old clothes in Christmas colors.

Here’s how:

1. Select the Fabric: I dug through a pile of old clothes and picked out pieces in red, green, and white.

2. Cut and Tie: I cut the fabric into small strips and tied each one onto a long piece of string. The random mix of colors and textures gave the garland a cozy, handmade vibe.

3. Hang It Up: Once the garlands were complete, I draped them over the TV and across the entryway.

Final Thoughts

These DIY projects were quick, easy, and cost me nothing but time. The decorations may not be store-bought perfect, but they’re full of charm and reflect our family’s personality. Plus, there’s something so special about making decorations with your own hands!

If you’re looking to add a little holiday cheer without breaking the bank, give these ideas a try. Repurposing old materials not only saves money but also keeps things sustainable—and who doesn’t love that?
