A Cozy Alternative to a Christmas Tree

Looking for a neutral winter-themed decoration to replace your small Christmas tree? I decided to create a fabric snowman with a soft, wintry aesthetic—no red or green in sight! Here’s how I made mine, inspired by a helpful YouTube tutorial (link below).
Materials Used:
• Old sheet material (though fleece or sweater fabric works better!)
• Brown pipe cleaners for arms
• Black buttons for the face and front
• An old sweater for a custom hat and scarf
How I Made It:
1. Create a Pattern: I used a simple teardrop shape for the head, middle, and bottom. Each section consisted of four teardrop panels sewn together.

2. Assemble the Body: Sew the right sides of the fabric together for each section. Then sew all three sections (head, middle, bottom) together to form the snowman’s body.

3. Add Details: I hand-sewed a nose, attached small black buttons for the eyes and mouth, and larger buttons down the front.

4. Craft Accessories: I repurposed an old sweater to make a hat and scarf. For the hat, I sewed a quick fluff ball for the top, and for the scarf, I added yarn fringe for a cozy touch.

5. Attach Arms: I tied brown pipe cleaners together, inserted them into the snowman, and sewed them securely.
6. Stuff and Finish: Once all details were added, I stuffed the snowman and sewed up any open seams.

Lessons Learned:
• Fabric Choice Matters: Using an old sheet made the project harder than it needed to be. Fleece or sweater material would’ve been much easier to work with!
• Size Adjustments: I wanted a larger snowman than the one in the video, so I scaled up the pattern myself.
I even made a smaller snowman to pair with the larger one for a charming winter duo! While sewing isn’t my strong suit, I’m happy with how they turned out. If you’d like to try this project, I highly recommend the YouTube tutorial I followed for guidance and patterns.
