Painting Old Vinyl Records for Every Season

A Year of Creativity

Over the course of a year, I embarked on a creative journey that turned old vinyl records into seasonal works of art. Starting in the summer and working through every holiday and season, this project was not only rewarding but also a wonderful way to express my imagination. Here’s a look at my process, my inspiration, and the lessons I learned along the way.

Summer: Sunflowers and New Beginnings

I began in the summer, with a simple but vibrant design: a sunflower. The bright yellows and rich browns captured the warmth and cheerfulness of the season. Painting this first piece was both fun and rewarding, setting the tone for the year ahead.

Fall: Trees and Transformation

For fall, I experimented with painting the back of the vinyl to create a smooth base. Using a pencil, I carefully traced the outline of a tree, then painted it in warm autumn tones. To my surprise, it turned out even better than I had hoped, with the branches and leaves perfectly capturing the essence of fall.

Christmas: Wreaths and Imagination

When Christmas came around, I decided to incorporate mixed media into my design. I cut out a small round sign that said “Merry Christmas” and mod podged it to the center of the record. Around it, I painted a festive wreath, layering colors and textures to bring it to life. Using my imagination and layering techniques really helped make this piece special.

Winter: Silver and White Elegance

After Christmas, I wanted to create a design that felt like winter decor but not tied to the holidays. I painted a buffalo plaid background in silver and white, then added a small paper sign with the words “Silver white winters that melt into spring,” mod podging it into the center. This piece felt cozy and elegant, perfect for the season.

Valentine’s Day: Hearts and Love

For Valentine’s Day, I embraced the theme of love. I started with a small round sign in the center that said “True Love” and mod podged it on. Then, I added paper hearts all around, creating a wreath-like design. This one was whimsical and sweet, a perfect celebration of the holiday.

St. Patrick’s Day: Green and Gold Luck

For St. Patrick’s Day, I used a green paper background with gold accents and mod podged it onto the record. To complete the design, I added faux four-leaf clovers in a wreath pattern. This piece felt festive and lucky, a great way to celebrate the season.

Easter: Tulips and Renewal

Easter brought a chance to play with florals. I started with a small sign that said “He has risen” and mod podged it in the center. Around it, I painted tulips in a circle. I later added a design over the tulips, but if I could do it again, I would have left it as it was. Sometimes simplicity is best!

Spring: Blossoms and Growth

For spring, I attempted to paint blossoming tree branches, but it did not turn out well at all so I just Mod Podged spring paper on the vinyl in frustration, but I don’t mind it too bad.

Memorial Day & Independence Day: Stars and Stripes

To wrap up the year, I created a patriotic design for Memorial Day and Independence Day. I painted a large American flag across the record, keeping it bold and simple. It was the perfect way to honor the season and bring the project full circle.

Reflections on a Creative Year

This project taught me so much about creativity, patience, and the joy of trying new things. Each record had its own challenges and rewards, but the process was always fulfilling. If you’re looking for a fun, year-long project, painting old vinyl records is a great way to celebrate the seasons while expressing your artistic side.
