I did another paper quilling project recently, and this one turned out so peaceful and pretty! I actually used an I-joist cutoff from our house build — just a leftover scrap of wood — and it ended up being perfect for this project. I love when I can reuse something from our build and turn it into something meaningful for our home.
Here’s a link to my favorite paper quilling tool kit to get started, I bought this one years ago and still use it to this day has everything you need! 👇
The I-joist piece already had a nice lip on both ends, which gave it a framed look without having to do any extra work. I painted it mostly white with a little bit of tan peeking through, just to give it that soft, neutral tone I love.

For the quilling, I stayed with neutral colors — creams, whites, and light browns — and started filling in the center. Before I started gluing the paper pieces down, I had printed out a word of encouragement:
“Don’t worry about anything; pray about everything.”
I cut out the words and glued them directly onto the board. You couldn’t really see the background paper through the letters, but that’s actually what made it so nice — the words became a simple guide for the design.

Then, I used the words as my template, shaping the paper quilling around each line. I just followed the flow of the text, and it all came together beautifully. Once the words were surrounded, I filled in the rest of the space with soft swirls and coils of cream, tan, and white paper.

The finished piece is just so calming — the neutral tones, the gentle paper textures, and the reminder to pray instead of worry. It feels like the perfect little handmade encouragement for this season.

I love how it turned out and how something as simple as a scrap of wood and a few strips of paper can turn into something so meaningful. It’s definitely one of my favorite quilling pieces I’ve made so far!
