Easy DIY Christmas Ornaments Using Junk Wood & Scrap Fabric

Affordable, adorable, and totally beginner-friendly!

Christmas crafting is my favorite way to get into the holiday spirit, and this year I decided to make a handful of homemade Christmas ornaments using nothing but junk wood cut-offs and scrap fabric I already had on hand. These little projects were quick, cozy, and perfect for anyone wanting to decorate on a budget—or make sweet handmade gifts.

Here’s exactly how I made each ornament!

🎨 1. Junk Wood Snowman Ornaments

I had several long, thin wood cut-offs—really narrow pieces that most people would probably throw away. But I immediately pictured little snowmen on them!

How I Made Them

I painted the wood white as the base. To give each one character, I hot glued a button or two on the front for decoration. On the back, I hot glued a ribbon loop so they can hang on the tree.

These turned out so cute and rustic—perfect farmhouse vibes from literal scrap wood!

🌲 2. Mini Junk Wood Christmas Tree Ornaments

How I Made Them

I painted a simple triangle-style tree with a little trunk. Added dots for ornaments and a tiny star shape at the top. Glued a ribbon on the back for hanging.

These are super small, so they make perfect filler ornaments for bare spots on your tree.

⭐ 3. Scrap Fabric Star Ornaments

(Inspired by Pinterest!)

I had a bunch of leftover material, so I tried a Pinterest idea—and it worked so well.

How I Made Them

I cut out three triangles from fabric scraps. Hot glued the points together to form a star shape. Added a button in the center for a cute touch. Glued a small ribbon loop on the back for hanging.

These stars look adorable in any fabric pattern—gingham, Christmas prints, plain colors, anything!

🎁 4. Decorative Holly Block (not exactly an ornament—but adorable!)

This last project isn’t technically an ornament, but it makes a cute shelf sitter or small gift.

How I Made It

I had a tiny rectangular wood block, so I covered it in a gold, sparkly ribbon material and hot glued it in place. I cut out holly leaves from some fabric scraps and glued them onto the front. Then I added three buttons as the berries.

It looks like a tiny handmade Christmas decoration you’d find in a boutique—and it cost basically nothing to make.

🎄 Final Thoughts

If you want easy, cozy Christmas crafting without spending money, these little projects are perfect. Using junk wood, scrap fabric, and buttons, I made several ornaments that look handmade in the best possible way.

They’d be great for:

teacher gifts stocking stuffers craft fairs decorating a rustic tree or just a relaxing holiday craft night.
