Filling the Gaps: Two Easy St. Patrick’s Day Decor Crafts from What I Already Had

This week, I realized I had a few open spots in my St. Patrick’s Day decorating that needed something — not big statement pieces, just those little areas that look unfinished without a bit of green. Instead of buying anything new, I decided to use what I already had on hand and make a couple of simple, fun crafts. Both projects came together easily and ended up being some of my favorite pieces this season.

Craft #1: Shamrock Junk Bottle Decor

For the three taller bottles, I printed off darker shamrock designs — deep green shamrocks on a black background — to give them a richer, moodier look. I Mod Podged the shamrock prints directly onto the bottles and then tied a simple white ribbon around the top of each one to soften them up a bit.

For the two smaller bottles, I wanted contrast. I used very light shamrock prints with a white background so they would stand out against the darker bottles behind them. At the top of these bottles, I tied dark green ribbon to help anchor them visually.

To finish off the front bottles, I dug into my stash and found two large, flat foam shamrocks from the dollar store that I had saved from a few years ago. They were sparkly and bold, so I hot glued one onto the front of each smaller bottle. This really helped them pop and gave the whole grouping more dimension.

To bring everything together, I added shamrock faux flowers into the tops of all five bottles — another dollar store find from past seasons. Arranged with the three taller bottles in the back and the two shorter ones in front, the whole set looks layered, festive, and surprisingly cohesive for being made entirely from odds and ends.

Craft #2: Lucky & Blessed String Art Candle Holder

For the second craft, I used a tall, square block of cedar wood that was left over from a previous project. It was basically junk wood, but I loved the height of it, so I decided to turn it into a decorative candle holder.

I painted the entire block white to give myself a clean base. On two opposite sides, I drew shamrocks, hammered in small nails along the outlines, and wrapped green string around the nails to create simple shamrock string art.

On the other two sides, I wrote out the words Lucky and Blessed. I added nails following each letter and wrapped them with string just like the shamrocks. It’s a small detail, but it adds so much texture and interest to the piece.

For the top, I added a white candle — but since the block itself was white, it blended in a little too much. To fix that, I did something I’ve tried before and absolutely love: I melted a couple of green crayons and painted the melted wax and used a paint brush to brush the wax on the candle. The result was a beautifully deep green candle that tied the whole piece together perfectly.

Now it looks like a tall, handmade candle holder that feels intentional, festive, and meaningful.

Final Thoughts

Both of these projects were made entirely from things I already had, which made them even more satisfying to create. They were quick, fun, and helped fill in those little decorating gaps that make a space feel finished. I love how they coordinate without being overly matchy, and they fit perfectly into my St. Patrick’s Day decor.

Sometimes the best seasonal pieces aren’t the ones you buy — they’re the ones you make with what’s already around you.
