“Joie Incommensurable” – Immeasurable Joy
There’s something so special about creating decor that isn’t just pretty—but meaningful. This piece has been on my heart for five years. It started as a simple idea between my husband and me, a phrase that means something deeply personal to us: “joie incommensurable,” which translates to immeasurable joy.
Life got busy, projects piled up, and this one kept getting pushed aside… until now. And honestly, finishing it made it even more meaningful.
Starting with a Simple Pallet Board
This project began with a long, rectangular piece of scrap wood from an old pallet that had been sitting outside. It was worn, discolored, and definitely not “pretty”—but I love giving new life to pieces like that.

To freshen it up, I painted the front in a soft tan color to create a warm, neutral base. Around the edges, I lightly brushed on a slightly shinier tan—just enough to give it a subtle framed look without being too bold.
Adding the Meaningful Phrase

The heart of this piece is the phrase “joie incommensurable.” I printed it out in a brown font that felt soft and timeless, then carefully cut it out using a scalpel.

After measuring and centering it on the board, I used Mod Podge to adhere it to the surface. Even at this stage, it already felt so special seeing those words finally come to life on something we could keep forever.
Creating Texture with Paper Quilling

I didn’t want the sign to feel too plain, so I added texture using paper quilling. I cut cream-colored paper into thin strips (you could use a shredder or scissors) and started forming soft swirls and circles.

On both ends of the sign, I clustered the quilling shapes more densely, then gradually spaced them out toward the center. This gave it a flowing, almost “falling” effect—like the design is gently moving across the board.

I also scattered small circular quilled pieces throughout to tie everything together and add a bit of whimsy.
Subtle Details That Make a Difference

I also lightly painted over some of the quilled pieces with tan, brown, and hints of gold. Not all of them—just a few here and there—to create depth and variation.
Finishing Touches
Once everything was in place and fully dry, I added hanging hardware to the back, and just like that… it was done.

And I absolutely love it.
Why This Piece Means So Much
This isn’t just another DIY project for me. It represents something I’ve wanted to create for years—a reminder of something deeply personal between my husband and me.
Sometimes the most meaningful projects are the ones that take the longest to finish. And when you finally do, they carry even more value.

If you have an idea sitting in the back of your mind—something meaningful you’ve been putting off—this is your reminder to go for it. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be yours. 💛
